Nepalgunj city which lies on Banke district and Bheri zone is the major commercial hub of Mid-Western Development region. The city has been established under the name of Nepalgunj Nagar panchayat in 2017 BS and later renamed to Nepalgunj Municipality in 2019 BS. The municipality had been divided into 17 wards, and recently in 16th of Mangshir 2071 BS, 10 VDCs around the city were merged into municipality to form Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan. This Sub-Metropolitan now has 27 wards. The city is 10 km away from East-West Mahendra Highway in the north and attached to Nepal-India border in the south. Nepalgunj city is also popular for being one of the major custom point of Nepal. The major market areas in the city are Eklaini, Sadarline, B.P Chowk, Tribhuvan Chowk, Dhamboji Chowk, Gharbari Tole and New Road areas. Rupaidhia, a town in India attached to Nepalgunj city is popular marketing destination for the peoples of Mid-Western Development region. The minimum temperature of the city is around 5° Celsius in the winter, around 46° Celsius in summer and average rainfall. Nepalgunj is also known to be the hottest city of Nepal.
Nepalgunj is around 500 km west of Kathmandu, the capital city. The major tourist places in the city are Waterpark, Bageshwori temple, Rani Pokhari, Mahendra Park, Bageshwori Park and mini zoo. The VDCs attached to the city are Hirminiya, Bankatti, Puraina and Kamdi in the east, Saigaun, Belbhar, Sitapur, Bageshwori, Khajurakhurda, Belhari and Ganapur in the west, Shumshergunj and Kohalpur in the north and India inthe south. Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan has total population of 1,41,700 (male 72,376 and female 69,324).

Nepalgunj Airport which (in ward no 26 prev: Manikapur VDC) is the second busiest airport of Nepal. There is a regular flight to and from Kathmandu, Jumla, Humla, Mugu, Chaurjhari, Surkhet, Rukum and Dolpa.
